See also:Born on the 18th of See also:February 1718 he was educated at the See also:parish school of St Ninians, and at the See also:grammar school of Stirling, and, after completing his course at See also:Edinburgh University, became See also:master of the grammar school at See also:Annan. In 1746 he was licensed to preach, and in 1748 was chosen See also:minister of a Presbyterian See also:congregation at See also:Carlisle, where he remained until 176o, when he removed to a similar See also:charge at See also:Berwick-on-See also:Tweed. In 1768 he became minister of the New Greyfriars' See also:Church, Edinburgh, and having received the degree of D.D. from Edinburgh University in 1771, and served as See also:moderator of the See also:general See also:assembly of the church of See also:Scotland in 1774, he was appointed one of the ministers of the Old Greyfriars' Church, Edinburgh, in 1776, remaining in this charge until his See also:death on the 24th of See also:November 1790. During his See also:residence in Berwick, Henry commenced his See also:History of See also:Great See also:Britain, written on a new See also:plan; but, owing to the difficulty of consulting the See also:original authorities, he did not make much progress with the See also:work until his removal to Edinburgh in 1768. The first five volumes appeared between 1771 and 1785, and the See also:sixth, edited and completed by See also:Malcolm See also:Laing, was published three years after the author's death. A See also:life of Henry was prefixed to this See also:volume. The History covers the years between the See also:Roman invasion and the death of Henry VIII., and the " new plan " is the See also:combination of an See also:account of the domestic life and commercial and social progress of the See also:people with the narrative of the See also:political events of each See also:period. The work was virulently assailed by Dr See also:Gilbert See also:Stuart (1742-1786), who appeared anxious to damage the See also:sale of the See also:book; but the injury thus effected was only slight, as Henry received 3300 for the volumes published during his lifetime. In 1781, through the See also:influence of the See also:earl of Mans-See also:field, he obtained a See also:pension of £See also:loo a See also:year from the British See also:government. The History of Great Britain has been translated into See also:French, and has passed into several See also:English See also:editions. An account of Stuart's attack on Henry is given in See also:Isaac D'See also:Israeli's Calamities of Authors.
