HENRY , or in full, HENRY See also:

BENEDICT MARIA See also:CLEMENT See also:STUART (1725-1807), usually known as See also:Cardinal See also:York, the last See also:prince of the royal See also:house of Stuart, was the younger son of See also:James Stuart, and was See also:born in the Palazzo Muti at See also:Rome on the 6th of See also:March 1725. He was created See also:duke of Yonk by his See also:father soon after his See also:birth, and by this See also:title he was always alluded to by Jacobite adherents of his house. See also:British visitors to Rome speak of him as a merry high-spirited boy with See also:martial instincts; nevertheless, he See also:grew up studious, See also:peace-loving and serious. In See also:order to be of assistance to his See also:brother See also:Charles, who was then campaigning in See also:Scotland, Henry was despatched in the summer of 1745 to See also:France, where he was placed in nominal command of See also:French troops at See also:Dunkirk, with which the See also:marquis d'See also:Argenson had some vague See also:idea of invading See also:England. Seven months after Charles's return from Scotland Henry secretly departed to Rome and, with the full approval of his father, but to the intense disgust of his brother, was created a cardinal See also:deacon under the title of the cardinal of York by See also:Pope Benedict XIV. on the 3rd of See also:July 1747. In the following See also:year he was ordained See also:priest, and nominated See also:arch-priest of the Vatican See also:Basilica. In 1759 he was consecrated See also:archbishop of See also:Corinth in. partibus, and in 1761 See also:bishop of See also:Frascati (the See also:ancient See also:Tusculum) in the See also:Alban Hills near Rome. Six years later he was appointed See also:vice-See also:chancellor of the See also:Holy See. Henry Stuart likewise held See also:sinecure benefices in France, See also:Spain and See also:Spanish See also:America, so that he became one of the wealthiest churchmen of the See also:period, his See also:annual See also:revenue being said to amount to £30,000 See also:sterling. On the See also:death of his father, James Stuart (whose affairs be had managed during the last five years of his See also:life), Henry made persistent attempts to induce Pope Clement XIII. .to acknowledge his brother Charles as legitimate See also:king of See also:Great See also:Britain, but his efforts were defeated, chiefly through the adverse See also:influence of Cardinal Alessandro See also:Albani, who was bitterly opposed to the Stuart cause. On Charles's death in 1788 Henry issued a manifesto asserting his hereditary right to the British See also:crown, and likewise struck a See also:medal, commemorative of the event, with the See also:legend " See also:Hen.

IX. Mag. Brit. Fr. et Hib. Rex. Fid. Def. Card. Ep. Tusc: " (Henry the Ninth of Great Britain, France and See also:

Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, Cardinal, Bishop of Frascati). In See also:February 1798, at the approach of the invading French forces, Henry was forced to See also:fly from Frascati to See also:Naples, whence at the See also:close of the same year he sailed to See also:Messina. From Messina he proceeded by See also:sea in order to be See also:present at the expected See also:conclave at See also:Venice, where he arrived in the See also:spring of 1799, aged, See also:ill and almost penniless.

His sad See also:

plight was now made known by Cardinal Stefano See also:Borgia to See also:Sir See also:John See also:Coxe Hippisley (d. 1825), who had formerly acted semi-officially on behalf of the British See also:government at the See also:court of See also:Pius VI. Sir John Hippisley appealed to See also:George III., who on the warm recommendation of Prince See also:Augustus See also:Frederick, duke of See also:Sussex, gave orders for the annual See also:payment of a See also:pension of f4000 to the last of the Royal Stuarts. Henry received the proffered assistance gratefully, and in return for the king's kindness subsequently See also:left by his will certain British crown jewels in his See also:possession to the prince See also:regent. In 1800 Henry was able to return to Rome, and in 1803, being now See also:senior cardinal bishop, he became ipso facto See also:dean of the Sacred See also:College and bishop of See also:Ostia and See also:Velletri. He died at Frascati on the 13th of July 1807, and was buried in the Grotte Vaticane of St See also:Peter's in an See also:urn bearing the title of " Henry IX."; he is also commemorated in See also:Canova's well-known See also:monument to the Royal Stuarts (see JAMES).
