The city is served by the See also:Pennsylvania, the Erie, the Lake Shore & See also:Michigan See also:Southern, the New York, See also:Chicago & St See also:Louis, and the Dunkirk, See also:Allegheny Valley & See also:Pittsburg See also:railways, by the electric See also:line of the Buffalo & Lake Erie See also:Traction Co., and by several lines of See also:freight and passenger steamships. Dunkirk is attractively situated high above the lake, and has several parks, including Point Gratiot and See also:Washington; in the city are the Dunkirk See also:free library, the See also:Brooks Memorial See also:hospital (1891), and St See also:Mary's See also:academy. The city lies in an agricultural and See also:grape-growing region, and has a See also:fine See also:harbour and an extensive lake See also:trade; the manufactures include locomotives, radiators, See also:lumber, springs, shirts, axes, wagons, See also:steel, See also:silk gloves and See also:concrete blocks. The value of factory products increased from $5,225,996 in 1900 to $9,909,260 in 1905, or 89.6%. Large See also:numbers of See also:food-See also:fish are caught in the lake. The See also:municipality owns and operates the See also:water See also:works and the electric See also:lighting plant. Dunkirk was first settled about 1805. It was incorporated as a See also:village in 1837, and was chartered as a city in 1880.
