ALBAN, See also:SAINT , usually styled the protomartyr of See also:Britain, is said to have been See also:born at See also:Verulamium (the See also:modern St Albans in See also:Hertfordshire) towards the See also:close of the 3rd See also:century, and to have served for seven years in See also:Rome in the See also:army of the See also:emperor See also:Diocletian. On his return to Britain he settled at his native See also:place and was put to See also:death as a See also:Christian during the persecution of Diocletian (c. 286-303). According to tradition, when See also:peace was restored, See also:great honours were paid to his See also:tomb. A See also:church was built on the spot, c. 793, by See also:King See also:Offa of See also:Mercia. A monastery was subsequently added, and around it the See also:present See also:town of St Albans gradually See also:grew up. See also:Pope See also:Adrian I.V., who was born in the neighbourhood, conferred on the See also:abbot of St Alban's the, right of See also:precedence over his See also:fellow abbots, a right hitherto attached to the See also:abbey of See also:Glastonbury. St Alban is commemorated in the See also:Roman See also:martyrology on the 22nd of See also:June; but it is impossible to determine with certainty whether he ever existed, as no mention of him occurs till the See also:middle of the 6th century.
