ABBOT, See also:GEORGE (1603-1648) , See also:English writer, known as " The Puritan," has been oddly and persistently mistaken for others. He has been described as a clergyman, which he never was, and as son of See also:Sir See also:Morris (or See also:Maurice) Abbot, and his writings accordingly entered in the See also:bibliographical authorities as by the See also:nephew of the See also:archbishop of See also:Canterbury. One of the sons of Sir Morris Abbot was, indeed, named George, and he was a See also:man of See also:mark, but the more famous George Abbot was of a different See also:family altogether. He was son or See also:grandson (it is not clear which) of Sir See also:Thomas Abbot, See also:knight of Easington, See also:East See also:Yorkshire, having been See also:born there in 1603–1604, his See also:mother (or grandmother) being of the See also:ancient See also:house of See also:Pickering. Of his See also:early See also:life and training nothing is known. He married a daughter of See also:Colonel Purefoy of Caldecote, See also:Warwickshire, and as his See also:monument, which may still be seen in the See also:church there, tells, he bravely held the See also:manor house against Princes See also:Rupert and Maurice during the See also:civil See also:war. As a layman, and nevertheless a theologian and See also:scholar of rare ripeness and See also:critical ability, he holds an almost unique See also:place in the literature of the See also:period. The terseness of his Whole Booke of See also:Job Paraphrased, or made easy for any to understand (1640, 4to), contrasts favourably with the usual prolixity of the Puritan expositors and commentators. His Vindiciae "Sabbathi (1641, 8vo) had a profound and lasting See also:influence in the See also:long Sabbatarian controversy. His Brief Notes upon the Whole See also:Book of See also:Psalms (1651, 4to), as its date shows, was See also:posthumous. He died on the 2nd of See also:February 1648.
