CHURCH, See also:GEORGE See also:EARL (1835–1910) , See also:American geographer, was See also:born in New See also:Bedford, See also:Massachusetts, on the 7th of See also:December 1835. He was educated as a See also:civil engineer, and was See also:early engaged on the Hoosac See also:Tunnel. In 1858 he joined an exploring expedition to See also:South See also:America. During the American Civil See also:War he served (1862–1865) in the See also:Army of the See also:Potomac, rising to the command of a See also:brigade and the See also:rank of See also:colonel; and in 1866–1867 he was war correspondent of the New See also:York See also:Herald in See also:Mexico. He explored the See also:Amazon (1868–1879), and gradually became the leading authority on that region of South America, being appointed See also:United States See also:commissioner to See also:report on See also:Ecuador in 188o, and visiting See also:Costa Rica in 1895 to report on its See also:debt and See also:railways. He wrote extensively on South and Central American See also:geography, and became avice-See also:president of the Royal See also:Geographical Society (See also:London), and in 1898 president of the geographical See also:section of the See also:British Association.
