In 1878 he was sent by the Harpers to See also:England to gather material for illustrations of the poems of See also:Robert See also:Herrick. These, published in 1882, attracted much See also:attention, and were followed by illustrations for See also:Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer (1887), for a See also:volume of Old Songs (1889), and for the comedies (and a few of the tragedies) of See also:Shakespeare. His See also:water-See also:colours and pastels were no less successful than the earlier illustrations in See also:pen and See also:ink. Abbey now became closely identified with the art See also:life of England, and was elected to the Royal See also:Institute of Painters in Water-Colours in 1883. Among his water-colours are " The Evil See also:Eye " (1877); " The See also:Rose in See also:October" (1879); " An Old See also:Song " (1886); " The Visitors " (189o), and " The Jongleur " (1892). Possibly his best known pastels are " See also:Beatrice, " " Phyllis," and " Two See also:Noble Kinsmen." In 1890 he made his first See also:appearance with an oil See also:painting, " A May See also:Day Morn," at the Royal Academy in See also:London. He exhibited " See also:Richard See also:duke of See also:Gloucester and the See also:Lady See also:Anne " at the Royal Academy in 1896, and in that See also:year was elected A.R.A., becoming a full R.A. in 1898. Apart from his other paintings, See also:special mention must be made of the large frescoes entitled " The Quest of the See also:Holy See also:Grail," in the See also:Boston Public Library, on which he was occupied for some years; and in 1901 he was commissioned by See also:King See also:Edward VII. to paint a picture of the See also:coronation, containing many portraits elaborately grouped. The dramatic subjects, and the brilliant colouring of his oil pictures, gave them pronounced individuality among the See also:works of contemporary painters. Abbey became a member not only of the Royal Academy, but also of the See also:National Academy of See also:Design of New York, and honorary member of the Royal Bavarian Society, the Societe Nationale See also:des See also:Beaux Arts (See also:Paris), the American Water-See also:Colour Society, etc.

He received first class See also:

gold medals at the See also:International Art See also:Exhibition of See also:Vienna in 1898, at Philadelphia in 1898, at the Paris Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900, and at See also:Berlin in 1903; and was made a See also:chevalier of the See also:French See also:Legion of See also:Honour.
