In 1789 he went to See also:Rome,. where he became a follower of the classicist German painters See also:Carstens and See also:Koch. He devoted himself more particularly to landscape See also:painting and to See also:aquatint See also:engraving. Examples of his landscapes are to be found at most of the important German galleries, notably at See also:Frankfort, See also:Munich, Leipzig and See also:Gotha. In Rome he executed a See also:series of landscape frescoes for the See also:Villa Massimi. He died in Rome in 1847.
