KOCH , a tribe of See also:

north-eastern See also:India, which has given its name to the See also:state of Kuch See also:Behar (q.v.). They are probably of Mongolian stock, akin to the Mech, Kachari, Garo and See also:Tippera tribes, and originally spoke, like these, a See also:language of the See also:Bodo See also:group. But since one of their chiefs established a powerful See also:kingdom at Kuch Behar in the 16th See also:century they have gradually become Hinduized, and now adopt the name of Rajbansi ( = " of royal See also:blood "). In 1901 the number in Eastern See also:Bengal and See also:Assam was returned at nearly 22 millions.
