RICHARD, ST , of Wyche (c. 1197-1253), See also:English See also:saint and See also:bishop, was named after his birthplace, See also:Droitwich in See also:Worcester-See also:shire. Educated at See also:Oxford, he soon began to See also:teach in the university, of which he became See also:chancellor, probably after he had studied in See also:Paris and in See also:Bologna. About 1235 he became chancellor of the See also:diocese of See also:Canterbury under See also:Archbishop See also:Edmund See also:Rich, and he was with the archbishop during his See also:exile in See also:France. Having returned to See also:England some See also:time after Edmund's See also:death in 1240 he became See also:vicar of See also:Deal and chancellor of Canterbury for the second time. In 1244 he was elected bishop of See also:Chichester, being consecrated at See also:Lyons by See also:Pope See also:Innocent IV. in See also:March 1245, although See also:Henry III. refused to give him the temporalities of the see, the See also:king favouring the candidature of See also:Robert Passelewe (d. 1252). In 1246, however, Richard obtained the temporalities. The new bishop showed much eagerness to reform the See also:manners and morals of his See also:clergy, and also to introduce greater See also:order and reverence into the services of the See also:church. His See also:term of See also:office was also marked by the favour which he showed to the See also:Dominicans, a See also:house of this order at See also:Orleans having sheltered him during his stay in France, and by his earnestness in See also:preaching a crusade. He died at See also:Dover in See also:April 1253. It was generally believed that miracles were wrought at his See also:tomb in Chichester See also:cathedral, which was See also:long a popular See also:place of See also:pilgrimage, and in 1262 he was canonized at See also:Viterbo by Pope See also:Urban IV.

Richard furnished the chronicler, See also:

Matthew Paris, with material for the See also:life of Edmund Rich, and instituted the offerings for the cathedral at Chichester which were known later as " St Richard's pence," His life by his See also:confessor, See also:Ralph Bocking, is published in the Acta Sanctorum of the See also:Bollandists, where a later and shorter life by See also:John See also:Capgrave is also to be found.
