His See also:early training as a sculptor was conducted at See also:Antwerp, but at the See also:age of twenty-five he went to See also:Italy and he settled in 1553 in See also:Florence, where his best See also:works still remain. His two most celebrated productions are the single See also:bronze figure of See also:Mercury, poised on one See also:foot, resting on the See also:head of a zephyr, as if in the See also:act of springing into the See also:air (in the Bargello See also:gallery), and the See also:marble See also:group known as the See also:Rape of the Sabines, which was executed for See also:Francesco de' See also:Medici and received this name, See also:Lanzi informs us, after it was finished. It is now in the Loggia de Lanzi of the ducal piazza. Giovanni was also employed at See also:Genoa, where he executed various excellent works, chiefly in bronze. Most of his pieces are characterized by See also:great spirit and elegance. His great See also:fountain at Bologna (1563–1567) is remarkable for beauty of proportion. Noteworthy also are his two fountains in the Boboli gardens, one completed in 1576 and the other in 1585. He also See also:cast the See also:fine bronze equestrian statue of Cosimo de' Medici at Florence and the very richly decorated See also:west See also:door of See also:Pisa See also:cathedral. One of Bologna's best works, a group of two nude figures fighting, is now lost. A fine copy in See also:lead was at one See also:time in the front quadrangle of Brasenose See also:College, See also:Oxford. In 1881 it was sold for old lead by the See also:principal and See also:fellows of the college, and was melted down by the plumber who bought it.
