Returning to See also:Italy with Garibaldi in 1848, he raised a See also:company of See also:volunteers to fight against See also:Austria, and commanded the volunteer vanguard in See also:Lombardy, proceeding thence to See also:Rome, where, he gained distinction by defending the " Vascello," a position near the Porta See also:San Pancrazio, against the See also:French. During the See also:siege of Rome he himself was wounded. In the wa,r of 1859 he commanded a volunteer See also:regiment, and was sent by See also:Cavour into See also:Tirol. In 186o he tried in vain to dissuade Garibaldi from the See also:Marsala expedition, but, after his See also:chief's departure, he sailed for See also:Sicily with the second expedition, taking See also:part in the whole See also:campaign, during which he forced See also:Messina to capitulate after an eight days' siege: Joining the See also:regular See also:army, he was appointed military commandant of See also:Palermo, in which capacity he facilitated the abortive campaign of Garibaldi in 1862. In 1866 he commanded the See also:division which invaded Tirol, but the effect of his victories was neutralized by the conclusion of See also:peace. Returning to Palermo he did See also:good See also:work in restoring See also:order in Sicily.
