It is the See also:object of an See also:ancient and famous See also:pilgrimage due to the tradition that See also:Mary, See also:sister of the Virgin, and Mary, See also:mother of See also:James and See also:John, together with their See also:black servant Sara, See also:Lazarus, Martha, Mary Magdalen and St Maximin fled thither to See also:escape persecution in See also:Judaea. The See also:relics of the two Maries, who are said to have been buried at Saintes-Maries, are bestowed in the upper See also:storey of the See also:apse of the fortress-See also:church, a remarkable See also:building of the 12th See also:century with crenelated and machicolated walls. Two festivals are held in the See also:town, a less important one in See also:October, the other, on the 24th and 25th of May, unique for its gathering of See also:gipsies who come in large See also:numbers to do See also:honour to the See also:tomb of their patroness Sara, contained in the See also:crypt below the apse.
