(1906) 3955• Les Andelys is formed by the See also:union of Le See also:Grand Andely and Le See also:Petit Andely, the latter situated on the right See also:bank of the See also:Seine, the former about See also:half a mile from the See also:river. Grand Andely, founded, according to tradition, in the 6th See also:century, has a See also:church (13th, 14th and 15th centuries) parts of which are of See also:fine See also:late See also:Gothic and See also:Renaissance See also:architecture. The See also:works of See also:art in the interior include beautiful stained See also:glass of the latter See also:period. Other interesting buildings are the hotel du Grand Cerf dating from the first half of the 16th century, and the See also:chapel of Sainte-Clotilde, See also:close by a See also:spring which, owing to its supposed healing See also:powers, is the See also:object of a See also:pilgrimage. Grand Andely has a statue of See also:Nicolas Poussin a native of the See also:place. Petit Andely sprang up at the See also:foot of the See also:eminence on which stands the See also:chateau See also:Gaillard, now in ruins, but formerly one of the strongest fortresses in France (see FORTIFICATION AND SIEGECRAFT and See also:CASTLE). It was built by See also:Richard Coeur de See also:Lion at the end of the 12th century to protect the See also:Norman frontier, was captured by the See also:French in 1204 and passed finally into their See also:possession in 1449. The church of St Sauveur at Petit Andely also See also:dates from the end of the 12th century. Les Andelys is the seat of a sub-See also:prefect and of a tribunal of first instance, has a preparatory See also:infantry school; it carries on See also:silk milling, and the manufacture of See also:leather, See also:organs and See also:sugar.
