POPE, See also:ALEXANDER (1763-1835) , Irish actor and painter, was See also:born in See also:Cork, and was educated to follow his See also:father's profession of See also:miniature See also:painting. He continued to paint miniatures and exhibit them at the Royal See also:Academy as See also:late as 1821; but at an See also:early date he took the See also:stage, first appearing in See also:London as Oroonoko in 1785 at Covent See also:Garden. He remained at this See also:theatre almost continuously for nearly twenty years, then at the Haymarket until his retirement, playing leading parts, chiefly tragic. He was particularly esteemed as Othello and See also:Henry VIII. He died on the 22nd of See also:March 1835. Pope was thrice married. His first wife, See also:Elizabeth Pope (c. 1744-1797), a favourite See also:English actress of See also:great versatility, was billed before her See also:marriage as See also:Miss Younge. His second wife, Maria See also:Ann Pope (1775-1803), also a popular actress, was a member of an Irish See also:family named See also:Campion. His third wife, See also:Clara Maria Pope (d. 1838), was the widow of the artist See also:Francis See also:Wheatley, and herself a skilful painter of figures and of See also:flowers.
