JAMES See also:EDWARD (1803—1885) , See also:British soldier and traveller, was See also:born on the 16th of See also:October 1803. He joined the See also:East See also:India See also:Company's See also:army in 182o, transferring into the British army in 1825. As aide-de-See also:camp to the British See also:envoy to See also:Persia, he was an See also:eye-See also:witness of the fighting in the See also:war between Persia and See also:Russia (1826), and in 1829 was See also:present in the Balkans during the Russo-See also:Turkish war. In 1832—1834 he was in See also:Portugal during the Miguelete war, and in 1835 served in the Kaffir war in See also:South See also:Africa as aide-de-camp to Sir See also:Benjamin D'See also:Urban. Subsequently he conducted an exploring expedition into See also:Namaqualand and See also:Damaraland, and was knighted for his services (1838). From 1841 to 1855 he served in See also:Canada, proceeding thence to the See also:Crimea, and in 1862 held an important command in New See also:Zealand during the See also:Maori war. He retired from the service in 1877, and in 1881 was given the honorary See also:rank of See also:general. He was largely responsible for the preservation and See also:transfer to See also:England of See also:Cleopatra's See also:Needle in 1877. His varied experiences provided material for a large number of books, among which were Travels from India to England (1827) ; Trans-See also:atlantic Sketches (1833); An Expedition of See also:Discovery into the Interior of Africa (1838) ; Passages in the See also:Life of a Soldier (1857) ; Incidents of the Maori War (1863). He was also the author of a Life of See also:- FIELD (a word common to many West German languages, cf. Ger. Feld, Dutch veld, possibly cognate with O.E. f olde, the earth, and ultimately with root of the Gr. irAaror, broad)
