After completing his preliminary See also:education in the little school at See also:Lexington, Virginia, which later See also:developed into See also:Washington and See also:Lee University, he came under the See also:influence of the religious See also:movement known as the " See also:great revival " (1789—1790) and devoted himself to the study of See also:theology. Licensed to preach in 1791, he was engaged for several years as an itinerant Presbyterian preacher in his native See also:state, and acquired during this See also:period the facility in extemporaneous speaking for which he was remarkable. He was See also:president of See also:Hampden-See also:Sidney See also:College from 1796 to 1807, with a See also:short inter-See also:mission (in 1801—1802), and in 1807 became pastor of See also:Pine See also:Street See also:Church, See also:Philadelphia. In 1812 he became first See also:professor in the newly established Presbyterian Theological See also:Seminary at See also:Prince-ton, New See also:Jersey, where he remained until his See also:death at See also:Princeton on the 22nd of See also:October 1851, filling successively the chairs of didactic and polemic theology (1812—1840), and See also:pastoral and polemic theology (1840—1851). He married, in 1802, Janetta Waddel, the daughter of the celebrated See also:blind preacher, See also:James Waddel (1739—1805), whose eloquence was described in See also:William Wirt's Letters of a See also:British See also:Spy (1803). Dr Alexander wrote a considerable number of theological See also:works, which had a largecirculation. Among these may be mentioned his Brief Outline of the Evidences of the See also:Christian See also:Religion (1825), which passed through several See also:editions, and ,was translated into various See also:languages; The See also:Canon of the Old and New Testament Ascertained; or the See also:Bible See also:Complete without the Apocrypha and Unwritten Traditions (1826); A See also:History of the Israelitish Nation (1852), and Outlines of Moral See also:Science (1852), the last two being published posthumously. See the See also:biography (New See also:York, 1854) by his son James W. Alexander.
