He went into business in See also:London after leaving school, but having acted as an See also:amateur he determined to make the See also:stage his profession. His first See also:appearance was at See also:Nottingham in 1879, and after some seasons of provincial experience he made his first London appearance as See also:Caleb Deecie in Two See also:Roses in 1881 with See also:Irving at the See also:Lyceum. He was selected by W. S. See also:Gilbert to support See also:Mary See also:Anderson in See also:Comedy and Tragedy, returned for a See also:time to the Lyceum, where he was Irving's See also:principal See also:associate, especially as See also:Faust (1886) and See also:Macduff (1888); and, after starting success-fully under his own management at the See also:Avenue See also:Theatre in 1890 with Dr See also:Bill, in 1891 became manager of the St See also:James's Theatre. There he produced a number of successful plays, notably Oscar See also:Wilde's See also:Lady See also:Windermere's See also:Fan and The Importance of being See also:Earnest, See also:Pinero's Second Mrs Tanqueray, The Princess and the Butterfly, His See also:House in See also:Order and The Thunderbolt; C. Haddon See also:Chambers's The Idler; H. A. See also:Jones's Masqueraders; See also:Alfred Sutro's See also:John Glayde's See also:Honour and The Builder of See also:Bridges; Carton's LibertyHall and The See also:Tree of Knowledge; See also:Anthony See also:Hope's Prisoner of Zenda and See also:Rupert of Hentzau; and See also:Stephen See also:Phillips's See also:Paolo and Francesca, himself playing the leading parts with See also:great distinction. In 1907 he was elected a member of the London See also:County See also:Council as a municipal reformer, but continued to See also:act regularly at the St James's.
