He was educated at University See also:College, London, and then at See also:Gottingen. Having renounced the Jewish faith, he returned to See also:England and entered See also:Sidney See also:Sussex College, See also:Cambridge, with the See also:design of taking orders. His See also:father's See also:death, however, prevented this, and in 1841 he took to See also:literary See also:work. He wrote a novel, See also:Caleb Stukely (1862), and other tales, and about 1845 began a connexion with The Times as literary critic. In the following See also:year he See also:purchased the See also:John See also:Bull newspaper, and edited it for a year. Two volumes of his Essays from The Times appeared in 1852 and 1854. Phillips took an active See also:part in the formation of the Crystal See also:Palace See also:Company, and wrote their descriptive guides. In 1852 the university of Gottingen conferred upon him the honorary degree of LL.D. He died at See also:Brighton on the 14th of See also:October 1854.
