James Phillips, printer and bookseller in See also:London, was See also:born on the loth of May 1775. He See also:early became interested in See also:mineralogy and See also:geology, and was one of the founders of the See also:Geological Society of London (1807). His Outlines of Mineralogy and Geology (1815) and Elementary Introduction to the Knowledge of Mineralogy (1816) became See also:standard textbooks. His See also:digest of See also:English geology, A selection of Facts from the Best Authorities, arranged so as to See also:form an Outline of the Geology of See also:England and See also:Wales (1818), formed the See also:foundation of the larger See also:work undertaken by Phillips in See also:conjunction with W. D. See also:Conybeare, of which only the first See also:part was published, entitled Outlines of the Geology of England and Wales (1822). This See also:volume made an era in geology. As a See also:model of careful See also:original observation, of judicious compilation, of succinct description and of luminous arrangement it has been of the utmost service in the development of geology in See also:Britain. In this work Phillips reprinted his admirable description of the See also:chalk cliffs of See also:Dover and other parts of See also:East See also:Kent, published in 1819 in Trans. Geol. See also:Soc. vol. v. Phillips was a member of the Society of See also:Friends. He was elected a See also:Fellow of the Royal Society in 1827. He died on the 2nd of See also:April 1828.
His See also:brother, See also:RICHARD PHILLIPS (1778-1851), was distinguished as a chemist, and became F.R.S. in 1822. He was appointed chemist and See also:curator to the Museum of Economic (afterwards See also:Practical) Geology, then situated in See also:Craig's See also:Court (1839). He was the author of papers published in the See also:Annals of See also:Philosophy and Philosophical See also:Magazine.
