Clane Bog, the eastern extremity, is within 17 M. of See also:Dublin, and the morasses extend westward almost to the See also:Shannon. Their See also:total See also:area is about 238,500 acres. They do not See also:form one continuous bog, the See also:tract of the See also:country to which the name is given being intersected by strips of dry cultivated See also:land. The See also:rivers Brosna, See also:Barrow and See also:Boyne take their rise in these morasses, and the See also:Grand and Royal canals See also:cross them. The Bog of Allen has a See also:general See also:elevation of 250 ft. above See also:sea level, and the See also:average thickness of the See also:peat of which it consists is 25 ft. It rests on a subsoil of See also:clay and See also:marl.
