He graduated at Harvard See also:College in 1851 and subsequently devoted himself almost entirely to See also:literary See also:work and teaching. In 1867 he became See also:professor of See also:ancient See also:languages and See also:history (afterwards Latin See also:language and See also:Roman history) in the university of See also:Wisconsin. He died in See also:December 1889. His contributions to classical literature chiefly consist of schoolbooks published in the Allen (his See also:brother) and See also:Greenough See also:series. The Collection of Slave Songs (1867), of which he was See also:joint-editor, was the first work of the See also:kind ever published.
