ANDERSON, See also:ROBERT (1750–1830) , Scottish author and critic, was See also:born at Carnwath, See also:Lanarkshire, on the 7th of See also:January 1750. He studied first divinity and then See also:medicine at the university of See also:Edinburgh, and subsequently, after some experience as a surgeon, took the degree of M.D. at St See also:Andrews in 1778. He began to practise as a physician at See also:Alnwick, but he became financially See also:independent by his See also:marriage with the daughter of Mr See also:John See also:Gray, and abandoned his profession for a See also:literary See also:life in Edinburgh. For several years his See also:attention was occupied with his edition of The See also:Works of the See also:British Poets, with Prefaces See also:Biographical and See also:Critical (14 vols. 8vo, Edin., 1792–1807). His other publications were, The See also:Miscellaneous Works of Tobias See also:Smollett, M.D., with See also:Memoirs of his Life and Writings (Edin., 1796); Life of See also:Samuel See also:Johnson, LL.D., with Critical Observations on his Works (Edin., 1815); The Works of John See also:Moore, M.D., with Memoirs of his Life and Writings (Edin., 7 vols., 1820); and The See also:Grave and other Poems, by Robert See also:Blair; to which are pre-fixed some See also:Account of his Life and Observations on his Writings(Edin., 1826). Dr Anderson died at Edinburgh on the loth of See also:February 183o.
