He practised See also:law, first in See also:partnership with Ebenezer Rockwood See also:Hoar, and later with Wilder See also:Dwight (1823–1862) and See also:Charles F.. See also:Blake; was appointed See also:associate See also:justice of the See also:state Supreme Court on the 23rd of See also:August 1864, becoming See also:chief-justice on the 5th of See also:September 1873; and was associate justice of the Supreme Court of the See also:United States from See also:December 1881 to August 1902, resigning only a few See also:weeks before his See also:death at Nahant, See also:Mass., on the 15th of- September 1902. Gray had a See also:fine sense of the dignity of the See also:bench, and a See also:taste for See also:historical study. His judgments were unmistakably clear and contained the essence of earlier opinions. A See also:great See also:case lawyer, he was a much greater See also:judge, the variety of his knowledge and his contributions to See also:admiralty and See also:prize law and to testamentary law being particularly striking; in constitutional law he was a " loose " rather than a " strict " constructionist.
