The preceding month, Quintilis, had been called " See also:July " after See also:Julius See also:Caesar, and the emperor See also:chose August to be rechristened in his own See also:honour because his greatest See also:good See also:fortune had then happened. In that month he had been admitted to the consulate, had thrice celebrated a See also:triumph, had received the See also:allegiance of the soldiers stationed on the Janiculum, had concluded the See also:civil See also:wars, and had subdued See also:Egypt. As July contained See also:thirty-one days, and August only thirty, it was thought necessary to add another See also:day to the latter month, in See also:order that the month of Augustus might not be in any respect inferior to that of Julius.
