BLAIR, See also:ROBERT (1699—1746) , Scottish poet, eldest son of the Rev. Robert Blair, one of the See also:king's chaplains, was See also:born at See also:Edinburgh in 1699. He was educated at Edinburgh University and in See also:Holland, and in 1731 was appointed to the living of Athelstaneford in See also:East See also:Lothian. He married in 1738 See also:Isabella, daughter of See also:Professor See also:William See also:Law. The See also:possession of a small See also:fortune gave him leisure for his favourite pursuits, gardening and the study of See also:English poets. He died at Athelstaneford on the 4th of See also:February 1946. His only considerable See also:work, The See also:Grave (1743), is a poem written in See also:blank See also:verse of See also:great vigour and freshness, and is much less conventional than its gloomy subject might See also:lead one to expect. Its religious subject no doubt contributed to its great popularity, especially in See also:Scotland; but the See also:vogue it attained was justified by its picturesque imagery and occasional felicity of expression. It inspired William See also:Blake to undertake a See also:series of twelve illustrative designs, which were engraved by See also:Louis See also:Schiavonetti, and published in 1808.
