ANDERSON, See also:JOHN (1726-1796) , Scottish natural philosopher, was See also:born at Roseneath, See also:Dumbartonshire, in 1726. In 1756 he became See also:professor of See also:oriental See also:languages in the university of See also:Glasgow, where he had finished his See also:education; and in 176o he was appointed to the more congenial See also:post of professor of natural See also:philosophy. He devoted himself particularly to the application of See also:science to See also:industry, instituting courses of lectures intended especially for artisans, and he bequeathed his See also:property for the See also:foundation of an institution for the furtherance of technical and scientific education in Glasgow, Anderson's See also:College, now merged in the Glasgow and See also:West of See also:Scotland Technical College. He died in Glasgow on the 13th of See also:January 1796. His Institutes of Physics, published in 1786, went through five See also:editions in ten years.
