city and the See also:county-seat of See also:Madison county, See also:Indiana, U.S.A., situated on the See also:west See also:fork of the See also:White See also:river, about 35 M. N.E. of See also:Indianapolis. Pop. (188o) 4126; (1Sgo) 10,741; (1900) 20,178, of whom 1o8r were See also:foreign-See also:born; (r610, See also:census) 22,476. It is served by the Central Indiana, the See also:Cleveland, See also:Cincinnati, See also:Chicago & St See also:Louis, and the See also:Pittsburg, Chicago & St Louis See also:railways, and also by the Indiana See also:Union See also:Traction See also:System (electric), the See also:general offices and central See also:power plant of which are situated there. Its importance as a manufacturing centre is due to its location in the natural See also:gas region. In 1905 Anderson ranked first among the cities of the See also:state in the manufacture of See also:carriage and See also:wagon material, and See also:iron and See also:steel. Among its many other manufactures are See also:glass and glass-See also:ware, See also:paper, strawboards, crockery and tiles. In 1905 the See also:total factory product was valued at $8,314,760. There is a See also:good public library; much See also:attention has been devoted to public improvements; and the See also:water See also:works and the electric See also:lighting See also:plants are owned and operated by the city. In connexion with the water works there is a good filtration plant. First settled about 1822, Anderson was incorporated in 1865.
