Graduating at See also:West Point in 1842, he served in the Mexican See also:War (in which he won the See also:brevet of first See also:lieutenant) and in the See also:Kansas troubles of 1856-1857,becomingfirst lieutenant in 1848 and See also:captain in 1855. At the outbreak of the See also:Civil War in 1861 he resigned his See also:commission in the U.S. See also:army, and entered the Confederate service as a brigadier-See also:general, being promoted See also:major-general in See also:August 1862 and lieutenant-general in May 1864. Lee and See also:Longstreet he served as a divisional See also:commander in nearly every See also:battle from 1862 to 1864, winning especial distinction at See also:Chancellorsville and See also:Gettysburg. When Longstreet was wounded at the battle of the See also:Wilderness, Anderson succeeded him in command of the 1st See also:corps, which he led in the subsequent battles. His services at the battle of See also:Spottsylvania (q.v.) were most important. He remained with the army, as a corps commander, to the See also:close of the war, after which he retired into private See also:life. He died at See also:Beaufort S.C. on the 26th of See also:June 1879.
