BEAUFORT , the name of the See also:

family descended from the See also:union of See also:John of Gaunt, See also:duke of See also:Lancaster, with See also:Catherine, wife of See also:Sir See also:Hugh See also:Swynford, taken from a See also:castle in See also:Anjou which belonged to John of Gaunt. There were four See also:children of this union—John, created See also:earl of See also:Somerset and See also:marquess of See also:Dorset; See also:Henry, after-wards See also:bishop of See also:Winchester and See also:cardinal (see BEAUFORT, HENRY) ; See also:Thomas, made duke of See also:Exeter and See also:chancellor; and See also:Joan, who married See also:Ralph See also:Neville, first earl of See also:Westmorland, and died in 1440. In 1396, some years after the See also:birth of these children, John of Gaunt and Catherine were married, and in 1397 the Beauforts were declared legitimate by See also:King See also:Richard II. In 1407 this See also:action was confirmed by their See also:half-See also:brother, King Henry IV., but on this occasion they were expressly excluded from the See also:succession to the See also:English See also:throne.
