See also:BEAUCHAMP, See also:ALPHONSE DE , See also:French historian and See also:man of letters, was See also:born at See also:Monaco in 1767, and died in 1832. In 1784 he entered a Sardinian See also:regiment of See also:marines, but on the outbreak of See also:war with the French See also:Republic, he refused to fight in what he considered an unjust cause, and was imprisoned for several months. After being liberated he took up his See also:residence in See also:Paris, where he obtained a See also:post in one of the See also:government offices. On the fall of See also:Robespierre, Beauchamp was transferred to the See also:bureau of the See also:minister of See also:police, and charged with the superintendence of the See also:press. This situation opened up to him materials of which he made use in his first and most popular See also:historical See also:work, Hisloire de la See also:Vendee et See also:des See also:Chouans, 3 vols., 18o6. The See also:book, received with See also:great favour by the See also:people, was displeasing to the authorities. The third edition was confiscated; its writer was deprived of his post, and in 1809 was compelled to leave Paris and take .up hisabode in See also:Reims. In 1811 he obtained permission to return, and again received a government See also:appointment. This he had to resign on the Restoration, but was rewarded with a small See also:pension, which was continued to his widow after his See also:death. Beauchamp wrote extensively for the public See also:journals and for the magazines. His See also:biographical and historical See also:works are numerous, and those dealing with contemporary events are valuable, owing to the See also:sources at his disposal. They must, however, be used with great caution. The following are See also:worth mention:— See also:Vie politique, militaire et privee du See also:general See also:Moreau (1814) ; See also:Catastrophe de See also:Murat, ou Re'cit de la derniere revolution de See also:Naples (1815) ; Hisloire de la guerre d'Espagne et du See also:Portugal, 1807-1813 (2 vols., 1819) Collection de memoires relatifs aux revolutions d'Espagne (2 vols., 1824); Histoire de la revolution de Piemont (2 vols., 1821, 1823); Memoires secrets et inedits pour servir d l'histoire contemporaine (2 vols., 1825). The Memoires de See also:Fouche have also been ascribed to him, but it seems certain that he only revised and completed a work really composed by Fouche himself.
