SOMERSET, See also:EDMUND See also:BEAUFORT, See also:DUKE OF (c. 1404–1455) , was the younger son of See also:John, See also:earl of Somerset, and See also:grandson of John of Gaunt, duke of See also:Lancaster. He was taken prisoner at Bauge in 1421 during his first See also:campaign, and did not return to See also:England till 1431. He was then styled earl of See also:Mortain, and in 1432 was one of the envoys to the See also:council of See also:Basel. In 1436 he served at the See also:relief of See also:Calais, two years later he commanded with some success in See also:Maine, and in 1440 recovered See also:Harfleur. Next See also:year he was made earl, and in 1443 See also:marquess of See also:Dorset. In 1444 on the See also:death of his See also:elder See also:brother he became duke of Somerset.
