His See also:artistic See also:education was chiefly supervised by his See also:father, but he also attended the York School of See also:Design, and worked for a See also:short See also:time in the Royal See also:Academy See also:Schools. He first exhibited at the Academy in 1853, and was a See also:constant contributor to its exhibitions till his See also:death. At the outset of his career he occupied himself mostly with landscapes and paintings of animals, executed with extraordinary detail in See also:imitation of the prevailing See also:taste of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood; but in 1857, while on a visit to the See also:West of See also:England, he made his first attempts as a See also:sea-painter. His success was immediate, and it had the effect of diverting hiq almost entirely from landscapes. Among his most important canvases must be reckoned " The See also:Pilot Cutter " in 1866, " The See also:Salmon Poachers " in 1869, " The Lifeboat " in 1876, " Highland Pastures " in 1878, " The Beached Margent of the Sea " in 188o, " The See also:Newhaven Packet " (bought by the See also:Birmingham See also:Corporation), and " Catspaws off the See also:Land " (bought by the See also:Chantrey Fund trustees); in 1885, " See also:Mount's See also:Bay " (bought by the See also:Manchester Corporation) in 1886, " Nearing the Needles " in 1888, " Machrihanish Bay, Cantyre," in 1892, " See also:Hove-to for a Pilot " in 1893, and " Glen Orchy," a landscape, in 1895. He was elected an See also:associate of the Royal Society of Painters in See also:Water See also:Colours in 1876, and a full member in r88o; an associate of the Royal Academy in 1885, and an academician in 1893; and at See also:Paris, in 1887, where he exhibited " The Newhaven Packet " and " The Clearness after See also:Rain," he received a See also:grand prix and was made a See also:knight of the See also:Legion of See also:Honour. He died at See also:Margate on the 22nd of See also:June 1895. His See also:works are marked by admirable appreciation of nature, and by a rare understanding of See also:wave-See also:form and See also:colour and of the subtleties of atmospheric effect; and as a sea-painter he may fairly be regarded as almost without a See also:rival.
