This afterwards declined, but it is now one of the See also:principal points of communication between England and See also:France, the railway See also:company maintaininga daily service of fast steamers to See also:Dieppe in connexion with the Chemin de fer de 1'Ouest. The tidal harbour, which is owned by a company, is enclosed by two piers and a See also:breakwater, the See also:area being about 30 acres, and the quayage 1400 yds. The roadstead is one of the finest on the coast of England. With France there is a large See also:traffic in wines, See also:spirits, See also:silk, See also:fruit, vegetables and See also:general provisions. The See also:coasting trade consists chiefly of imports of See also:coal and provisions, the exports being principally See also:timber for See also:shipbuilding and See also:flint for the See also:Staffordshire See also:potteries. Some shipbuilding is carried on.
