At fifteen she was a See also:pupil at the See also:ballet school connected with the Haymarket See also:theatre, conducted by See also:Paul See also:Taglioni, and became a dancer on the See also:stage. In 1846 she married See also:George H. Gilbert (d. 1866), a performer in the See also:company of which she was a member. Together they filled many engagements in See also:English theatres, moving to See also:America in 1849. Mrs Gilbert's first success in a speaking See also:part was in 1857 as Wichavenda in See also:Brougham's Pocahontas. In 1869 she joined See also:Daly's company, playing for many years wives to See also:James See also:Lewis's husbands, and old See also:women's parts, in which she had no equal. Mrs. Gilbert held a unique position on the American stage, on See also:account of the admiration, esteem and See also:affection which she enjoyed both in front and behind the footlights. She died at See also:Chicago on the 2nd of See also:December 1904. See Mrs Gilbert's Stage Reminiscences (1901).
