DAMARALAND , a region of See also:

south-western See also:Africa, bounded W, by the See also:Atlantic, E. by the See also:Kalahari, N. by Ovampoland, and S. by See also:Great See also:Namaqualand. It forms the central portion of See also:German South-See also:West Africa. Damaraland is alternatively known as Hereroland, both names being derived from the tribes inhabiting the region. The so-called Damara consist of two probably distinct peoples. They are known respectively as " the See also:Hill Damara " and " the See also:Cattle Damara," i.e. those who breed cattle in the plains. The Hill Damara are Negroes with much Hottentot See also:blood, and have adopted the Hottentot See also:tongue, while the Cattle Damara are of distinct See also:Bantu-See also:Negro descent and speak a Bantu See also:language. The See also:term Damara (" Two Dama See also:Women ") is of Hottentot origin, and is not used by the See also:people, who See also:call themselves Ova-See also:herero, " the Merry People " (see See also:HOTTENTOTS and HERERO).
