DAMANHUR , a See also:

town of See also:Lower See also:Egypt, 38 M. E.S.E. of See also:Alexandria by See also:rail, See also:capital of the richly-cultivated See also:province of Behera. It is the See also:ancient Timenhor, " town of See also:Horus," which in Ptolemaictimes was capital of a See also:nome and See also:lay on the Canopic See also:branch of the See also:Nile. Its name and other circumstances imply that Horus (= See also:Apollo) was worshipped there in the same See also:form as at See also:Edfu (See also:Brugsch, Dictionnaire geographique, p. 521), but its See also:Greek name, Hermopolis Parva, should indicate See also:Thoth as the See also:local See also:god. This apparent See also:contradiction is perhaps due to some See also:early misunderstanding that held its ground after the Greeks knew Egypt better. A much frequented See also:fair is held at Damanhur three times a See also:year, and there are several See also:cotton manufactories. See also:Population (1907) 38,752.
