Stimulated by See also:George See also:Whitefield's example, he scandalized the university authorities and his own See also:friends by See also:preaching and visiting the sick before he had taken orders. In 1773 he was appointed to the See also:parish of See also:Kingston, See also:Somersetshire, where he soon attracted See also:great crowds to his open-See also:air services. Having inherited consider-able See also:property, he built for his own use See also:Surrey See also:Chapel, in the Blackfriars Road, See also:London (1783). His See also:earnest and pure purposes more than made up for his occasional lapses from See also:good See also:taste and the eccentricity of his wit. He helped to found the Religious See also:Tract Society, the See also:British and See also:Foreign See also:Bible Society, and the London Missionary Society, and was a stout See also:advocate of See also:vaccination. His best-known See also:work is the See also:Village Dialogues, which first appeared in 181o, and reached a 34th edition in 1839. He died on the 11th of See also:April 1833.
