He had a musical See also:education at See also:home and in See also:Italy, and for four years from 1783 was engaged to sing at the See also:Court See also:Theatre at See also:Vienna, where he became a friend of See also:Mozart. In 1786 he sang in the first performance of the Nozze di See also:Figaro. Appearing in See also:London, at See also:Drury See also:Lane in 1787, he had a See also:great success, and thenceforth was the See also:principal See also:English See also:tenor at that theatre. In 1793 he became acting-manager of the See also:King's Theatre, and he was in great See also:request at concerts. He wrote a number of songs (including " The See also:Woodpecker"), and the See also:music for many dramatic pieces, now fallen into oblivion. In 1826 he published his entertaining Reminiscences, in See also:writing which he was helped by See also:Theodore See also:Hook. He combined his professional See also:work with conducting a music-See also:shop and a wine-shop, but with disastrous See also:financial results. He died at See also:Margate on the 9th of See also:October 1826.
