THEODORE , the name of two popes. Theodore I., See also:

pope from See also:November 642 till May 649, succeeded See also:John IV. He was the son of a See also:bishop, and was See also:born in See also:Jerusalem. A zealous opponent of monothelitism, in the course of the protracted controversy he in a See also:Roman See also:synod excommunicated See also:Pyrrhus, See also:patriarch of See also:Constantinople, and signed the document with See also:ink mingled with consecrated See also:wine. Theodore II. had a pontificate of only twenty days (Nov.–Dec. 897).
