He participated with his See also:elder See also:brothers, See also:Gregory and See also:Alexis, in the coup d'etat of 1762, after which he was appointed See also:chief See also:procurator of the See also:senate. During the first See also:Turkish War of See also:Catherine II. he served under See also:Admiral Spiridov, and was one of the first to break through the Turkish See also:line of See also:battle at Cheshme. Subsequently, at See also:Hydra, he put to See also:flight eighteen Turkish vessels. These exploits were, by the See also:order of Catherine, commemorated by a triumphal See also:column, crowned with See also:naval trophies, erected at Tsarskoe Selo. In 1775 he retired from the public service. Orlov was never married, but had five natural See also:children, whom Catherine ennobled and legitimatized.
