The Devonshire See also:title, now in the See also:Cavendish See also:family, had previously been held by See also:Charles See also:Blount (1563-1606), 8th See also:Lord See also:Mountjoy, See also:great-See also:grandson of the 4th Lord Mountjoy (d. 1534), the See also:pupil of See also:Erasmus; he was created See also:earl of Devonshire in 1603 for his services in See also:Ireland, where he became famous in subduing the See also:rebellion between 1600 and 1603; but the title became See also:extinct at his See also:death. In the Cavendish See also:line the 1st earl of Devonshire was See also:William (d. 1626), second son of See also:Sir William Cavendish (q.v.), and of See also:Elizabeth Hardwick, who afterwards married the 6th earl of See also:Shrewsbury. He was created earl of Devonshire in 1618 by See also:James I., and was succeeded by William, 2nd earl (1591-1628), and the latter by his son William (1617-1684), a prominent royalist, and one of the See also:original members of the Royal Society, who married a daughter of the 2nd earl of See also:Salisbury.
