SMITH, See also:COLVIN (1795—1875) , Scottish portrait-painter, was See also:born at See also:Brechin, See also:Scotland, in 1795. He studied in See also:London in the See also:schools of the Royal See also:Academy and worked in Nollekens's studio. He then proceeded to See also:Italy, where he executed some See also:fine copies from See also:Titian; and at See also:Antwerp be made studies from the See also:works of See also:Rubens. Returning to Scotland in 1827, he settled in See also:Edinburgh, occupying the See also:house and studio which had formerly belonged to See also:Raeburn. Soon he attained a wide practice as a portrait-painter, and among his sitters were See also:Lord See also:Jeffrey, See also:Henry See also:Mackenzie, author of The See also:Man of Feeling, and many of the most celebrated Scotsmen of the See also:time. His portrait of See also:Sir See also:Walter See also:Scott was so popular that he executed some twenty replicas of it, for seven of which he received fresh sittings. His works are distinguished by excellent draftsmanship, by directness and simplicity of treatment, and by well-marked individuality. He died in Edinburgh on the 21st of See also:July 1875.
