He studied in See also:London in the See also:schools of the Royal See also:Academy and worked in Nollekens's studio. He then proceeded to See also:Italy, where he executed some See also:fine copies from See also:Titian; and at See also:Antwerp be made studies from the See also:works of See also:Rubens. Returning to Scotland in 1827, he settled in See also:Edinburgh, occupying the See also:house and studio which had formerly belonged to See also:Raeburn. Soon he attained a wide practice as a portrait-painter, and among his sitters were See also:Lord See also:Jeffrey, See also:- HENRY

His works are distinguished by excellent draftsmanship, by directness and simplicity of treatment, and by well-marked individuality. He died in Edinburgh on the 21st of See also:July 1875.
