Educated at See also:Shrewsbury School and See also:Christ See also:Church, See also:Oxford, after a brilliant university career he was elected See also:fellow of Balliol, where he was See also:tutor from 1835 to 1840. After holding successively the See also:college livings of Duloe and See also:South Luffenham, in 1854 he was elected See also:master of Balliol. This See also:office he held, together (from 1861) with that of the professorship of the exegesis of See also:Holy Scriptures, down to 187o, when he accepted the deanery of See also:Rochester. As master of Balliol he kept the college up to the high level it had attained under his predecessor Dr Jenkyns. As a See also:Greek See also:scholar, he had few equals among his contemporaries. His See also:great See also:literary achievement, which may be said to constitute his See also:life's See also:work, was his collaboration with See also:Dean See also:Liddell in the Greek See also:lexicon which bears their names. He died at Rochester on the 2nd of See also:December 1887.
