In 1843 he settled in See also:Indiana, and later had some military experience in the See also:United States See also:army. At the outbreak of the See also:Civil See also:War he raised the 8th See also:Missouri See also:regiment, of which he was elected See also:colonel in 1861. He commanded a See also:brigade at the See also:capture of Fort See also:Donelson, and did See also:good service at See also:Shiloh. In See also:July 1862 he was made a brigadier-general U.S.V., and served under See also:Sherman in the See also:river expedition against See also:Vicksburg. At the See also:battle of See also:Chickasaw See also:Bayou he received a severe See also:wound, from which he recovered only in See also:time to join theArmyof the See also:Tennessee before See also:Chattanooga. He led his See also:division See also:iif the battles of the Chattanooga See also:campaign, as also, in the following See also:year, in the See also:Atlanta campaign. At the battle of Atlanta he commanded See also:Logan's See also:corps. Afterwards he was placed in See also:charge of Vicksburg. General Sherman said of M. L. Smith, " He was one of the bravest men in See also:action I ever knew." He died at See also:Jersey See also:City on the 29th of See also:December 1874.

brother, See also:GILES See also:ALEXANDER SMITH (1829–1876), also a distinguished soldier of the Federal army, was born in See also:Jefferson county, N.Y., on the 29th of See also:September 1829. At the beginning of the Civil War he joined the Missouri See also:volunteers, in which he became a See also:captain. He took See also:part in the capture of Fort Donelson, the battle of Shiloh and the operations against See also:Corinth, becoming, later in 1862, colonel of a regiment which he led at Chickasaw Bayou. After the final campaign against Vicksburg he was promoted brigadier-general of volunteers. He was wounded at the battle of Chattanooga. He took part in the Atlanta campaign, the " March to the See also:Sea " and the Carolinas campaign, rising to the See also:rank of See also:major-general of volunteers. After the war he declined the offer of a colonelcy in the See also:regular army, and was subsequently engaged in politics, retiring from public See also:life in 1872. He died at See also:Bloomington, See also:Ill., on the 8th of See also:November 1876.
