(formed in 1847). He engaged in politics, first as a Whig and then as a Republican. In 1849 he was elected See also:president of the See also:Board of Assistant Aldermen of New York See also:City; he was a member of the state See also:senate in 1850-1853 and procured the passage of the See also:bill providing for the See also:establishment of Central See also:Park in New York City; in 1855-1858 he was state See also:commissioner of See also:immigration; from 1859 to 1863 he was See also:governor of New York, being the first Republican executive of the state; in 1863-i869 he was See also:United States senator from New York. He died in New York City on the 14th of February 1883. Morganwas one of the founders of the Republican party, and was chairman of the See also:National 'Republican See also:Committee in 1856-x864 and in 1872. He was one of the most efficient and able' of the w'idt'igovernors; even before the 'outbreak of the See also:Civil War he did much to prepare the `state See also:government for it, and from See also:September 1861 to See also:January 1863 he was in command of the military See also:department of New York, with the See also:rank- of See also:major-See also:general of See also:volunteers. He was a liberal donor to See also:Union Theo-logical See also:Seminary, See also:Williams See also:College and other institutions. His collection of paintings and See also:sculpture, much of which had See also:long been loaned to the See also:Metropolitan Museum, was sold in January 1886.
