He succeeded to his See also:mother's See also:estate of Charlton in See also:Wiltshire, was created K.B. in 1605, became See also:master of the See also:horse to See also:Prince See also:Charles, and was created See also:Lord Howard of Charlton and See also:Viscount See also:Andover in 1622, K.G. in 1625, and earl of Berkshire in 1626. In 1634 he was chosen high steward of the university of See also:Oxford. He was a See also:commissioner for negotiating the treaty of See also:Ripon in 1640, and accompanied the See also:king to See also:York in 1642. While attempting to execute the king's See also:commission of See also:array in See also:Oxfordshire in See also:August he was taken prisoner by See also:Hampden at Watlington and imprisoned in the See also:Tower, but after being censured by the Lords was liberated in See also:September. In 1643 he was made See also:governor of the prince of See also:Wales, a See also:post for which he was in no way fitted, and in whichhe showed himself factious and obstructive. He accompanied the prince to Scilly and to See also:Jersey, but on the latter's departure for See also:France went to See also:Holland. At the Restoration he was made a privy councillor and received rewards. He died on the 16th of See also:July 1669, and was buried in See also:Westminster See also:Abbey. According to See also:Clarendon " his See also:affection for the See also:crown was See also:good; his See also:interest and reputation less than anything but his understanding." He married See also:Elizabeth, daughter and co-See also:heir of See also:William, earl of See also:Exeter, by whom he had nine sons and four daughters. Of these Charles succeeded him as 2nd earl of Berkshire; Thomas succeeded the latter; and See also:Philip was ancestor of See also:John, 15th earl of Suffolk and 8th earl of Berkshire, and so of the later earls of Suffolk and Berkshire.
