At the first See also:battle of See also:Saratoga (See also:Sept. 19) he was, until Arnold's arrival See also:late in the See also:day, the ranking officer on the See also: After the battle of See also:Camden, however, he joined Gates (then in command in the See also:South) at Hillsborough, See also:North Carolina, and on the 1st of See also:October took command of a See also:corps. On the 13th of the same See also:month Congress tardily raised him to the rank of brigadier-general. In See also:January 1781 See also:Cornwallis and See also:Tarleton attempted to entrap him, but at the See also:Cowpens (See also:Jan. 17) he defeated Tarleton and then escaped from Cornwallis into North Carolina. Apparently Morgan suggested to See also:Greene (who had superseded Gates) that general's See also:plan of battle at See also:Guilford See also:Court See also:House on the 15th of March. In See also:December ' 1793 he was commissioned See also:major-general of Virginia See also:militia, 'and in November 1794 commanded troops sent to suppress the See also:Whisky Insurrection in western See also:Pennsylvania. He was a Federalist representative in Congress in 1797-1799,
and died in See also:Winchester, Virginia, on the 6th of July 1802.
