COWPENS , a See also:

town of See also:Spartanburg See also:county, See also:South Carolina, U.S.A., in the N. See also:part of the See also:state. Pop. (1900) 692; (1910) 1101. It is served by the See also:Southern railway. In colonial days See also:cattle were rounded up and branded here—whence the name. Seven See also:miles N. of the town is the See also:field of the See also:battle of Cowpens, fought on the 17th of See also:January 1781, during the See also:War of See also:American See also:Independence, between the Americans under Gen. See also:Daniel See also:Morgan and the See also:British under Gen. Banastre See also:Tarleton, the British being defeated. A See also:monument was erected on the battle-field in 1859, but was much defaced during the See also:Civil War. The town of Cowpens was founded in 1876, and was incorporated in 1880.
