NEILL (c. 1612—1664), son of See also:Conn See also:MacNeill MacFagartach O'Neill, a member of the Clanaboy See also:branch of the See also:family, whose wife was a See also:sister of See also:Owen See also:Roe, was prominent in the See also:Civil See also:Wars. He spent much of his See also:early See also:life at the See also:court of See also:Charles I., and became a See also:Protestant. He commanded a See also:troop of See also:horse in See also:Scotland in 1639; was involved in See also:army plots in 1641, for which he was committed to the See also:Tower, but escaped abroad; and on the outbreak of the Civil See also:War returned to See also:England and served with See also:Prince See also:Rupert, being See also:present at See also:Marston See also:Moor, the second See also:battle of See also:Newbury and See also:Naseby. He then went to See also:Ireland to negotiate between See also:Ormonde and his See also:uncle, Owen Roe O'Neill. He was made a See also:major-See also:general in 1649, and but for his Protestantism would have succeeded Owen Roe as See also:chief of the O'Neills. He joined Charles II. at the See also:Hague, and took See also:part in the expedition to Scotland and the Scotch invasion of England in 1652. At the Restoration he received many marks of favour from the See also:king, including grants of See also:land and lucrative monopolies. He died in 1664.
